Kimberly, from beginner to beginner: BEFORE you buy, it's worth the $300 or so to hire a home inspector, as Joe says, who will go through the house with you top to bottom. Mine not only showed me the good, the bad, and the you know, he also taught me the anatomy of a house, how the major systems work, and gave me an idea of what would cost what and how to prioritize.

If you still want to buy it, then move on to Jay's advice to call in the contractors for "real" estimates and go from there.

If you're like me, even after all this, you're still going to have a million questions - so call in some on-site pros now and then hang on to these on-line guardian angels for dear life!

Good luck!
