Durock Shower Installation

Posted by cdurkin on February 19th, 2003 07:08 PM

the builder installed durock walls using metal studs for a 3'x5' shower (2"x2" tiles). to my surprise, the durock on the back wall does not butt either of the side walls -- there is substantial gap from ceiling to floor (so obviously these corners are also not taped). the drywall contractor said the tile contractor would fill this gap with mastic. however, the tile contractor said nothing was needed to fill the gap -- the tile would cover the gap AND the grout between the tiles and a caulk over the grout would provide a waterproof barrier. (also understand that the caulk will need to be very wide to hide the unsightly wide grout lines). does all of this sound like it's being done in a 'workmanlike manner'? thank you for your response. (p.s. this is a 'repair' job -- the first shower they put in (new construction) leaked -- however, they wouldn't rip the whole thing out to fix it -- just the back wall, shower pan, and about a foot high of drywall and tile on both side walls.)
