With a 1/8 inch difference, I think it'll probably show. Popcorn and stipple textures hide some imperfections, but that might be pushing it. Once you remove the popcorn, you could spread some durabond and/or joint-compound over the area where there's a 1/8 inch difference. By doing so, you will have a more tapered contour and the differences will be less noticeable. Note: Be sure to tape the joints first and use a wide blade putty knife for the final coats, like a 12 inch. Good Luck
