drywall mud vs. textured ceiling compound

So, we can use drywall mud instead of the more expensive textured ceiling compound? I had been told that we can use it, but that it must be watered down. Is that what you mean by the mixing consistancy?
We used the ceiling compound 20 years ago, and it held up pretty well(we painted it), but $9 compared to $22 is a big difference! We just trowelled on the compound and then used a textured roller. That's what we were planning on doing with the drywall mud. What do you suggest?
