2 big advantages of vertical orientation are that nearly all of your joints can be bevel edged, which tapes smoother, and there are fewer joints that are not continuously solidly backed. One disadvantage is that full length vertical joints are more prone to creating a "knee" effect if the studs are not aligned or if they move in the future.
