about ten years ago I did an old house with plaster that was a mess, my solution, as we were living there at the time, was this: locate all studs, cover all walls with 1/4" drywall. The reason for 1/4" was threefold:1- there was no reason to remove trim (3/4" clear fir, rock rests on top), 2- there was no reason to seriously mess with electrical (loosen the recepticles a tade and the face plates will still tighten)and,3- if you are living in the house demo of lath and plaster is a mess. The only problem with my solution is that 1/4" rock is never carried in a home center. many small neighborhood lumberyards will stock it, especially if you live in a neighborhood with older homes which face the same problem. also 1/4" rock is fragile. take your time and be careful, but you could save a ton of time and hassle. good luck
