Kate, Can't say for sure, but I had a problem similar to that on a fridge we used to have. It was a top freeser, with self defrost. What happened was the drain line from the top freezer defrost pan, would occasionally freeze shut. Then the condensate water having nowhere to go would drain out the front. The fix entailed a little work , but was free. It required a complete defrost and dry out of the freezer. This can be speeded up with some pans of hot water and a hair dryer. You need to get the freezer warmed up enough to thaw out any ice that is in back of the walls. Good Luck. Bob
