I have a friend with a similar problem as yours. Believe it or not, he installed a winch in the back of his garage (he has about a 100 foot drive) When it gets real slippery, he walks up to the garage, unspools the cable down to his car, and then winches it up! Like I said, drastic measures.
Dayton (the tire manufacturer) makes an excellent snow tire (real snow tire) that runs fairly quiet, and has the ability to install studs. (if they are legal in your area)
