Try to dig a hole about 6 feet long (in the direction water is to move) by 4 feet wide. start to fill pebbles at far end of hole only and front with the dirt contine this making the stone fill the hole on an angle. to under stand better draw a box on paper then draw aline from the left top corner down to the bottom right corner. the box is the hole , the line is the stone and the rest of the space in the box is the dirt. Remember some sand is not a bad idea just remember to fill only the opossite side of the box, (in the dirertion of the water) you dont want the water flowing throw the sand back to house. Lawn Boy is right on the money in keeping the top clear of grass and leaves. Good Luck
