Kathy, you may be suprised to learn that the cause
of the drafts you feel is not at the bottom of the
house where you feel them, but at the top (attic)
were your expensively heated air is escaping to the
outside. When the warm air escapes, a slight depres-
surization is formed at the lower levels which sucks
in cold outside air through every crack and crevice.
The solution is not to try to block all these but to
reduce the amount of air escaping into the attic.
Look for and seal large openings first, such as chimney
and utility chases, poorly fitting attic hatch covers,
etc. Then you can go for smaller penetrations such as
around light fixtures, and around electirc cables and
pipes where they come through wall top plates. If you
have forced air heating, duct leakage can contribute
to the problem, but is harder to diagnose. Take a look
at for more info.
