bc is right in saying that you don't want to spread the steps out. If it is a choice between no steps and spreading them out, definately don't use steps. Like BC says, in the dark you (or someone else) is going to miss a step and fall. You end up creeping forward with your toes trying to feel where the step is, it is REALLY annoying. So you are now either putting all the steps together or having no steps at all. How comfortable is the walk now with no steps? If you don't have a problem with it, then you can probably use no steps. How would the walk be on that same slope with snow, ice or rain? If it isn't too steep I would go with the no steps.
