I've always used a putty knife & it works pretty well. - about as well as an ameteur can expect. Make sure the putty is soft (hold it in your hands for awhile) and apply a lot of pressure on the knife.
Hold the knife at a 45 degree angle to the horizontal line of the window - I don't mean the bevel of the glazing ... assuming the window is a square, the end of the blade should point from the bottom corner of the window to the opposite top corner of the window - using the corner of the blade to cut the putty where it comes in contact with the window. The end of the blade running along the window frame will cut the putty on that side.
Do the whole length in one continuous motion (if you can.)
