Liz, the beam is there (as you noted) for support. It needs to remain in place to support
the existing roof which the old wall used to support. Removing this beam would have dire
consequences. If the beam is unsightly there are methods to spruce it up to ADD decore to
the room. You can stain/polyurathane it, cover it with oak/walnut/maple, etc., or even drop
a ceiling underneath it. Anyway, if you post back up with some more specifics regarding
your situation maybe myself or others here can offer some
better advice.Wick
