Applying any paint to a laminate countertop is a questionable practice. Paint cannot hold up on a counter exposed to cutting, moisture and heat. And faux painting styles are particularly not durable. HGTV sometimes features projects that look good on TV, but I pity the person that must live with their "creative" ideas. It might be more instructive to go back a year later and see what the Trading Spaces counter has been traded in for.

Dont even consider faux. Use a backer board and apply a real surface of stone tile, ceramic or porcelein; or replace the counters.
