does cement explode? A genuine question...

I have heard that if one (moi) chose to build a garden / heating (ornamental / entertaining) fire place out of "recycled" concrete... with a flue (sp?)...old driveway cement... no oil stains, with regular or fire mortar between, that the structure potentially could come undone via the heat drying out the cement, or that the wood fire heat may cause cement air / moisture pockets... to burst...

AM I MAD, Have i pushed the recycled concrete concept to the point of danger?
please respond.... Before it is too late..
