Do you have to use a heating iron to seam carpet?

We have some nearly indestructible indoor-outdoor carpet on our screened-in porch. Well, to the elements, it is indestructible; to my dog it was not. She chewed the edges and they look awful. I would like to seam a border around the room to add pizazz and remove the frayed doggie-damage now that her 5 or so years of teething are over. My question is this, is there a tape or something that I can use so that I can do this job myself? I would think this would be such a small job, I would pay up the yingyang to get someone way out here to do it. I am pretty handy--any ideas?--AO'M
