Yes, there are a number of things you should know. Did you receive Installation Instructions w/your Sump Pump? It may only go into the installation of the pump and NOT the 'design' and such of the pit, and so on.
Generally speaking, you try to locate the pump in a 'corner', you try install it where the water is going to run to, you 'line' the pit w/lanscape or filter fabric + some gravel, you try to keep 'stuff' from filling or falling into the pit, you run the discharge line NO HIGHER than the recommended height for the pump, you DON'T 'dump' the pit's water at the base of the foundation (outside the wall); You try to route it AWAY from the house, you should consider a battery for a back-up (assuming your new pump is AC/DC. If not, you'll want to consider a standby generator).
I'm sure there's more. You might want to bite the bullet and have a pro do the install. Or at least pay one to visit for the 1st hour to at least guide you through what needs to be done.
