I haven't undertaken a job like this myself but if you're comfortable with some plumbing work and electrical work, you should be OK.

Since you're gonna save some good $$$ by doing it yourself, I suggest you buy yourself a good book or 2 on the subject. If you save $1000, then $100 in books is an investment; not an expense when it comes to getting it right the first time. Besides, you can positively saturate yourself with what the pros do and how to troubleshoot. I'm sure there are right/wrong/good/bad ways to do this type of job.

So, try - Ortho's All About Sprinklers and Drip Systems and How To Design And Build A Sprinkler System. I can't recommend one over the other but there's info on both WEB pages about the book.

My best to ya and hope this helps.
