Steve is right and I am sorry to say Mr Walton is not. By mixing up a leveling compound and filling in the areas where the tar paper (oil based paper) is, then going over that with the tile is just asking for trouble. If the leveling compound doesn't stick to the tar paper, which it won't! the tile will come up too. This leveling compound should be used to skim the seams on the new subfloor, hiding the seams on the wood. Trust me I'm in the flooring business, and have been my whole life.
