Agreeing w/Henry, it's best to leave the brick alone. Unless you heat your home with the fireplace, you shouldn't have to regularly clean the brick anyway. Besides, soot on brick is 'character' IMO. There are cleaners out there that clean the soot. Just make sure you read the instructions, and do it on a day you can open windows.
