Dishwasher airgap overflow

I just installed a new Kenmore Elite dishwasher, new granite counters, and a new airgap. When I operate the dishwasher, water flows from the airgap into the sink. The dishwasher drain line is attached to the large diameter side of the airgap, because that is where it fit. Is the height of the top of the airgap in relationship to the cap critical, and should there be a low spot in the hose that drains from the airgap into the garbage disposal?
