Dimmer gets warm

You mean the dimmer feels warm. Which they do, but nothing electrical should ever get hot. Hot wires or switches or plugs is NEVER a good thing in electricity. It imply too much resistance. Some dimmers have a heat exchanger, a plate with cooling fins to help disperse the heat. You are at 960 watts with a 1000 watt dimmer. Get the 1500 watt dimmer, with the heat exchanger plate and dim the line into the fixture.
