difference between soundproofing and stopping echoes

Alot of people believe the more blankets you put up, or the more foam or the more egg crates you put up, the more sound you stop from getting out or in, not true. The rule of soundproofing is the heavier something is, the more sound it will stop. Egg crates and matresses only stop the sound from reverberating around the room, which is a good thing, but is not going to stop you from pissing off your neighbors.
