If your daughter's desk was an antique, or likely to be one some day, I would refinish. If it's just another desk and you just want to get by, you might try Minwax Blend-Fil Pencils or a similar wax based product. You rub the wax into the grooves and hope that the kid doesn't feel like making a project of rubbing that out soon. You will want to get 2 or 3 of the pencils in the colors that are in your wood's finish tones and blend these like the colors are blended in the wood.
