ED,

THE MATERIAL AND LABOR IS CHEAPEST IF BOUGHT AND INSTALLED YOURSELF. BUT THE ROOM OR WHATEVER THAT'S BEING WORKED ON, THERE'S NO 'FLAT RATE'. IT'S A PER JOB QUOTE. ONCE YOU GET THAT, AFTER THE CONTRACTOR IS FINISHED, DIVIDE THE TIME TAKEN INTO THE COST AND YOU GET YOUR HOURLY RATE, MATERIAL INCLUDED.

IF YOU CAN GET A CONTRACTOR TO SAY $5 PER SHEET FOR 1/2" 4' X 8' DRYWALL @ $35 PER HOUR, THEN HE'LL TAKE HIS GOOD OLD TIME DOING THE JOB KNOWING THAT YOU'RE PAYING HIM $35 PER HOUR. IF, INSTEAD, HE QUOTES YOUR $450 TOTAL AND IT TAKE HIM 5 HOURS OR 10 HOURS, THE JOB IS STILL $450. IF YOU'RE TRYING TO GET INTO THE CONTRACTOR'S HEAD, YOU MIGHT HURT YOUR BRAIN.

WHAT I CAN SUGGEST IS THAT YOU GET A MATERIALS LIST WITH PRICES AND A FLAT LABOR RATE FOR THE WHOLE JOB; NOT ON AN HOURLY BASIS. THIS WAY, IF IT TAKES HIM 10 HOURS INSTEAD OF 5, YOUR QUOTE WILL HAVE THE FLAT RATE FOR THE ENTIRE JOB. THAT'S THE BEST YOU MIGHT GET. NOW, THE DOWNSIDE IS THAT IF THERE'S MATERIAL THAT HE NEEDS AND IT ISN'T IN THE ORIGINAL QUOTE, YOU'LL HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT. BUT YOU WOULD HAVE PROTECTED YOURSELF FOR THE 'EXTRA TIME' BY GETTING YOURSELF THE FLAT LABOR RATE FOR THE ENTIRE JOB.

YOU MAY WANT TO KEEP THINGS SIMPLE. GET 3 QUOTES, THEN AFTER YOU HAVE THEM ALL, CALL EACH ONE BACK AND FIND OUT WHY ONE IS MORE, OR LESS, THAN THE OTHER. LET THEM TELL YOU. MAYBE THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE MATERIAL, MAYBE IN THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIAL, MAYBE IT'S A LEVEL OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT'S COSTING SO MUCH. MY BEST TO YA AND HOPE THIS HELPS.

JAY J
