on how they were put in. my first tool would be a pry bar. if it was attached too firmly to the backer board, then i'd whip out the sawzall and cut the whole thing off, wall and all. don't cut the studs! all of the ones i've encountered have been attached with silicone caulk. can't get that stuff off.
