Depending on the size of the crack you can use a variety of...

If the crack is big, then the home is shifting around. This crack will return each summer and winter as the soil expands and contracts.

I would use nylon tape and some joint compound. If its small, I would force some paintable latex/silicon caulking into the crack and paint over it. Both methods will allow for shifting and flexibility to an extent.

You can also use spackle. Just whatever you use, make sure that it is paintable. 100% silicon is not paintable and will shed paint like water on a ducks back.
