I'm looking to have a deck built, and I've had a number of estimates done, but there is a drastic difference in price from one estimate to another. I don't know anything about what is the "best" way to constuct a deck, so I will throw out a few general questions that maybe someone can answer for me:

1. What would be the best type of wood? White pine, green treated, cedar, or something completely different? (I'm in the upper midwest, so winters can be harsh).

2. Use screws or nails?

3. Open steps or a "back" to them?

4. Should the underneath be open, skirted, or latticed?

Thanks for your help,
