The structural design of a deck is somewhat dependent on geography and location, and may be governed by local codes. The "floating" design may be good for areas where it doesn't get very cold. However in the northern climes the frost line may wreak havok on a free floating deck.
Another possible design to consider would be to break through the concrete patio where necessary to install posts, sunk to below the frost level, for a post and beam construction that would not move. ...Just some thoughts from the northern part of the country.
