deck on top of patio

Posted by Brian on April 2nd, 2001 06:38 PM

I'm building a relatively large but low to the ground
(12"-18") deck that will extend beyond an existing
concrete patio in every direction. My design will
require three posts where the patio sits, so I am
concerned with how to deal with that. The rest of my
post holes will be 18" deep. Most people feel
comfortable with just telling me to bolt the posts
directly to the patio but I'm still not sure. I doubt
that the patio is more than 4" thick so it could float
over time. I've considered building a floating deck,
but I'd rather attach it to the house.

What is the best way of dealing with this? The last
thing I would like to do is tear up the patio. For
what's it's worth, I live in Raleigh, NC.
