In addition to solving the water intursion problem, suggest getting a relative humidity meter to monitor the RH in basement. Its important keep it below 50% RH to help dry the carpet and walls. Mold grows rapidly and a musty odor follows. If it gets wet, several box fans and keeping the RH below 50% will dry it in a couple days. Without air movement, mold will grows before 50%RH gets it dry.
