Damaged Plasterboard (Drywall)

Thanks Andi,

What do you mean by a proper backing? We will
probably paint or paper (vinyl).

At this stage we are now thinking of putting
a coat of plaster on the existing surface.
Where the paper has come off the board,
it's down to the brown cardboard-type paper.
Where there's plaster it's covered with a
"rubbery" adhesive, which is extremely difficult
to remove. Could we just plaster over these
surfaces or what?
