Cutting crown molding correctly involves
cutting one side straight and then cutting the
other piece at a 45 degree angle (as it would be
placed on the ceiling). But, at this point it is
necessary to use the the cut line on the face as
a guide for sawing (with a coping saw) off the
material protrudes from that line.

The idea is to allow this coped edge to meet with
the already mounted molding. It allows for the lack
of a 90 degree angle in many corners.
