creaking, popping floor

Posted by Allan Benvin on February 1st, 2003 04:01 PM

We have two bedrooms on the top floor of our house. If you step anywhere within two feet of the wall separating these rooms the floor makes very load creaking and popping noises. I have pulled up the carpet and underlay and put some extra screws through the floor into the beams but it hasn't made a difference.
The floor seems to be made from 4'x8' sheets of strand board (OSB). One of these boards lies directly beneath the wall in question. I'm guessing there is something wrong with either this board or the beams below it. I can't get at it from below, as our kitchen ceiling is below this wall.
Does anybody have any ideas? I'm hoping I don't have to rip out the ceiling or remove the wall between the bedrooms to fix this.
Thanks in advance for your help.
