Angela - RL makes a great crackle medium that is available at The Home Depot.

Prime your tables with Glidden Gripper. After that apply your burgundy color - satin finish is best. Once that is dry - apply the crackle medium - wait between 4 - but not more than 24 hours for the crackle medium to dry.

Apply your black top coat. You can do this with a brush, roller, or a sponge. You can only apply this coat once - if you brush or roll back and forth, you will pull the paint off. You must use a finish FLATTER than a semi-gloss - ie: Eggshell, or Satin. Semi-gloss paint have additives in them that stop them from cracking.

Once you are done - apply an ALKYD varnish to the piece to protect it - Acrylic varnish will crack.

Best is to get some medium - read the directions - and practice BEFORE you do your coffee table..

Good Luck!
