Cracked Floor Beam

Posted by Tim on March 5th, 1998 05:12 PM

I have main beam that spans about 24'. It is badly cracked and I was trying to find some advice on either replacing or scabing onto it. I have dicuss this with a friend and we have thought of using built up lam beams or bolting 2 pieces of steel channel beam to either side. I wanted to take the whole thing out and try to put something in that could span the distance without a middle support. I just can't seem to come up with and idea that will take. It is a basment beam suporting a 21/2 to 3 story house thatr was built in the late 1800. It is a 8"x9" beam suppoted in the middle by a 12 by 12 brick column. I wanted to either elimanate the column or replace it with a narrower steel column.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
