Terence,is it lest costly for you if they took off the old wood and use the existing strapping, (if it is still good )or to strap over the wood to put on the new vinyl siding. the only thing i would be worried about if you strap over your wood ,would be your windows, will it look good. the strapping is 3/4 thick plus your vinyl, THAT WILL TAKE OUT YOUR OUTSIDE WALL 1 TO 1 1/2 INCHES,ask the contracter what he will do with your windows if he straps over the wood,(DEPENDING IF YOUR WINDOWS ARE COMING OUT A BIT OR NOT)hope i didn't confuse you , just trying to help, good luck.
