I have had really good luck using the Brite Boy metal cleaner purchased from Home Depot. I have tons of un-lacquered brass and copper in the house. If you want to protect the finish you need to use clear lacquer immediately after cleaning. Probably mask before cleaning. Remember that eventually the lacquer may wear through and then the cleaning job is more difficult (acetone strip first). So thats how I would do it.
