The black powder comes from the ears of the hinges wearing on each other. It seems worse in the last 10 to 15 years, an I suspect it is from the use of lower grade metals in the hinges. Another way to stop this is to spray a lubricant such as WD40 to saturate part of a paper towel, and then rub it on both sides of the hinges. This will clean off the black, and leave enough residual lubrication to prevent the wear. You do have to repeat this every month or so. Otherwise, a more permanent method is to do as Mod Steve says, clean the hinges with the pin removed, only I would suggest using a light coat of petroleum jelly on the pin when you reassemble.
