For the type of use you'd give it, an inexpensive 1/2 H.P. or more direct-drive or diaphram compressor will do fine. There is no real user maintenance to these types except to occasionally clean the filter and drain the tank, but if you get a piston type unit, there's where your oil question comes in; it will require changing on occasion and is a better choice for an industrial shop.
