Garrett, Sounds like you got yourself a good roofer. In the last few years studies have came out saying that when asphalt shingles are placed over just the plywood, the shingles last longer, and less damage you will have if you had a water problem. The shingles "breathe" better without the paper. The Ice barrier is becoming a rule of thumb for the first 3-6 foot of the roof. Other wise paper is on the out swing. My boss' company has not put paper on a roof in the last 5 years and we have not had a single complaint, and living on Mass. coast near boston with the weather, guarentees this application.
