Cold air return.

With out seeing the job I would suggest that what ever you do, atleast be sure that the frunace gets the same amount of cold air return as it started out with. Do this by making sure the openings you move or create equal the same square inch are that you remove. For example if the pipe feeding those openings measures 14" in diameter determine the square inch area of that circle and compare that to your new opening in terms of square inches.
