cleaning up wood floors

I recently removed older carpet in a bedroom. The padding was old and looked like it was made out of rubber. (?) It really stuck to the floor and hardened in several places. I scraped as much off as I could but there are still a few spots where the padding didn't come off. There's also a faint, dull residue with the same "egg carton" pattern the padding had. What can I use to clean the wood floors, without damaging them? (I don't want to refinish them if possible)
