Cleaning Brick Fireplace Wall

Well, OK, after reading quite a few posts regarding
the disadvantages of painted brick you all have
convinced me not to paint my livingroom's brick
fireplace wall. :-) So what's the best way to clean
the brick and mortar to get rid of the old, dusty,
sooty look and refresh/enhance the color of the bricks?
The house is about 50 years old and I doubt that any
of the previous owners ever did a thing to maintain
this fireplace wall, including cleaning it. It
doesn't look as though any sealant or preservative has
ever been applied, either...after cleaning it, do I
need to apply any sort of sealant?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
