I have a 70+ year old home and the woodwork has many coats
of paint. If you find a crack and work at it just a bit you can
lift off chunks of paint exposing nice looking varnished (I believe)
wood beneath. We want to repaint and mostly want it safe for our child
wrt lead. One painter is telling us that the way it chips off, he thinks the
varnished wood was not properly prepped before the first
painting and the only way to really fix it is to strip it all to the wood.
Another is saying it's a waste of time and money to strip, and we should just
knock off the loose stuff and sand/fill and paint. Any opinions?
