chinking for log home

We recently purchased a log home I think from the 1930's. We just love it but the home has been very neglected. The chinking on the exterior is coming out something terrible. We need to know a very good formula for making a chinking material as we don't have a fortune to buy a product like log jam or perma chink. Please help us.
