Cherry Wood Finishing Problem

I just finished an Amish Heritage cherry table with the lemon oil/beeswax finish they supplied. Used 3 coats with light steel wooling between coats. It looks great but now it seems it starts to get rough in any area I go over with a slightly damp sponge after a meal. I suspect this is grain raising but if it is, it seems like the finishing is doing nothing to protect the wood.

Are there any suggestions for resolving this? Are there other finishes that would provide better protection and what would I have to do to apply them since this oil/wax finish is already on there? Thanks...
