Hi, Deanna. I guess that no one wants to tell you the bad news. Painting any tile is not a good idea and especially around a fireplace. The smooth, hard surface almost guarantees a difficult painting job and one that will not last long, in all probability. You can almost be sure that it will flake and peel. Then you will be stuck with removing all the paint and a scratched surface on the tile. In addition to this is the possibilty of the paint catching fire and leading to a larger fire. I am sure that your best course is to find a way to lighten other areas and work the present fireplace tile into the overall design of the room.

Good luck
