Central Heat Not Working

In reply to how do you turn on heat manually by LJ in TX on December 26th, 2002 09:58 PM [Go to top of thread]

Thanks for replying, LJ. It works like this...

Function Setting = Heat
Fan Setting = Auto
Result = Heat will not kick on no matter what the temperature in the house is relative to the setting on the thermostat.

Function Setting = Cool
Fan Setting = Auto
Result = A/C will kick on when temperature in house rises above setting on thermostat.

Function Setting = Heat
Fan Setting = On
Result = Heat will come on for a while but eventually the air coming out will turn cool. Not sure how long it takes for air to turn cool, but I suspect it is an expected result since the heating element cannot stay charged indefinitely without burning up.

Given the three sets of symptoms described above, I tend to suspect a problem with either the fan relay or the heater relay. The problem I have is I have no schematic or diagram to help me troubleshoot this scenario. I am also open to other suggestions for sure if someone happens to know of other scenarios that could explain the above behavior. Thanks!!
