Cement board is the best way to go. It is water proof, so it won't detiorate or warp when it gets wet. These conditions associated with plywood under tile contributes to tiles becoming loose or cracking, or at least grout cracking. Cement board provides a rigid surface that resists the minute deflections in the sub floor surface--which can also contribute to cracking tile or cracking grout joints.
